Rohit Sharma only plays the ODI format for the Indian Cricket Team.

Rohit Sharma is the current ODI skipper of the Indian Cricket Team and only represents the national team in the 50-over format. Last year, he announced his retirement from the T20Is after leading the team to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Last month, he also pulled the curtains down on his test career. As of now, India has three captains in all three formats. Shubman Gill was appointed as the new skipper of the tests, while Suryakumar Yadav is the captain in the T20Is.

However, according to reports, Indian selectors might sack Rohit Sharma as the ODI skipper too to avoid three captains across different formats. Moreover, the next ODI World Cup is scheduled for 2027, and Sharma will be 40 years old by then. Hence, Indian selectors are eyeing to prepare a younger captain who can lead the team effectively in the ICC event.

BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025- Reports

During a chat with Hindustan Times, an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that they expected Sharma to retire after winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March, which India won under his leadership.

“Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors since over his ODI future,” he said.

On the contrary, Sharma reckoned after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory that he would continue to play in the ODIs. Last month, during the inauguration ceremony of his stand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, he again emphasised that he has retired from two formats but is happy to play in one format.

With the Indian selectors’ long-term vision in ODIs, Shubman Gill might be given the ODI captaincy as well. However, the decision will be made after the upcoming test series against England, where the young batter will showcase his captaincy skills for the first time in the longest format of the game.
