Rohit Sharma amassed 157 runs during SL vs IND three-match ODI series, including two fifties.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has opened up on his aggressive batting approach during the Sri Lanka vs India three-match ODI series.

After losing the T20I series 3-0, hosts Sri Lanka crushed the Indian cricket team in the three-match ODI series. After winning the final match of the ODI series by a massive 110 runs, the hosts sealed the series 2-0.

The injury-hit Sri Lankan side defeated the No. 1 ranked ODI team India in a bilateral ODI series for the first time in 27 years.

The star-studded Indian batting line-up was left clueless against the quality spin-bowling attack of the Sri Lankan team. The Men in Blue lost 27 wickets out of 30 against spinners, which was the most by any team in a bilateral ODI series (maximum 3 matches).

Rohit Sharma opens up on his batting approach in the powerplay

Veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma showed his class on a pitch where the other Indian batters were struggling to score against spinners. The Men in Blue skipper was the highest run-getter in the three-match ODI series. The 37-year-old amassed 157 runs at a stunning average of 52.33, including two fifties, at a strike rate of 144.

Throughout the series, Rohit provided quick starts to the Indian cricket team, but the rest of the batters failed to capitalize on it.

After a humiliating series defeat, the veteran Indian opener spoke of his aggressive style of batting approach in the powerplay. Rohit said that he knew the wicket would play a little slow after the powerplay, so he took chances in the first 10 overs to get as many runs as possible.

“I knew that the runs that will be scored during the powerplay will be critical. I knew that the wickets will get a little slow after that, the ball will turn a bit and even the field is spread out. When there are only two fielders outside the ring, we had to take our chances. I took those chances whenever I felt that I could put the bowler under pressure. All the runs that you score over and above that, it benefits the team to play the remaining 40 overs,” Rohit Sharma said during the post-match conference after losing the 3rd ODI.

Wanted to score as many runs in powerplay: Rohit Sharma

The 37-year-old Rohit further talked about his personal efforts throughout the series with the bat. The veteran opener added that his main motive was to score runs in powerplay and try to build momentum for the team.

“My personal effort was to ensure that I score as many runs as I could. It was not as if I wanted to throw my wicket away after the powerplay. I wanted to continue the momentum and intent, but I unfortunately got dismissed while trying to play a few shots. My batting plan is pretty simple and straightforward,” Sharma added.
