Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

Veteran Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement after lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the grand finale by seven runs and lifted the T20 World Cup after a span of 17 years. Previously, the Indian side won the inaugural edition of the global tournament in 2007.

In the T20 World Cup 2024, the Rohit-led India became the first side in the world to win the T20 World Cup unbeaten. The 37-year-old became the second Indian captain after legendary MS Dhoni to lift the T20 World Cup trophy as captain. The Indian side also ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought.

The Indian opener Rohit, ended the tournament as highest run-getter for his side. Also, the right-handed batter was the second highest leading run-scorer at the T20 World Cup 2024.

In eight matches, Rohit amassed 257 runs at an average of 36.71, including three half-centuries. His highest score was 92, which came against Australia in their Super 8 clash.

The veteran Indian cricketer Rohit ended his T20I career with staggering numbers. The 37-year-old played 159 T20Is and smashed 4231 runs at an average of 32.05. After winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title, Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format, but said he will continue to play in the other two formats during the post-match press conference on June 29.

Weeks after lifting the World Cup trophy, Rohit has expressed his thoughts on his international cricket career.  During a recent event in Dallas, the former India T20I captain was asked about his playing future. The 37-year-old said that he is not looking too far ahead, but still has plenty to offer in the other two formats.

“I just said it. I don’t go that far ahead. So clearly, you will be seeing me play for a while,” Rohit said at an event.
