Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma clears the air around Shreyas Iyer's fitness

Shreyas Iyer underwent a surgery in March 2023 and missed out on major international events.
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is hopeful of Shreyas Iyer’s return for the World Cup 2023. Shreyas Iyer is currently undergoing rehabilitation at National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. Shreyas Iyer suffered a lower back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Iyer has been missing out on major tournaments due to the injury.
He underwent surgery in March which ruled him out of the Indian Premier League and World Test Championship Final against Australia. With Jasprit Bumrah returning against Ireland, and KL Rahul in line for return, Fans are expecting Iyer to be fit and make a solid comeback in the World Cup 2023.
Captain Rohit talks about Iyer’s injury
Giving a hint about Shreyas Iyer, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said, “I know there is a lot of talk on the guys injured (Iyer and Rahul), and are in Bangalore getting treated. Honestly, I am not going to reveal who is going to be batting at Number 4 and 5, and 6 now. I will but not now. But talking about Iyer, I think he is on track in terms of his fitness. I am keeping my fingers crossed.”
“I don’t want anybody to be injured or anyone to stay injured during the World Cup. I want all the resources that are available to us”. Shreyas Iyer has been a formidable option for India batting at number 4 in the ODI format.
Vacuum after Yuvi-Raina
India suffered a massive vacuum in number 4 since India’s premier all-rounders Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina moved away from the Indian cricket team. In the previous edition of Cricket World Cup in 2019, India faced a similar challenge at number 4 when they dropped Ambati Rayudu right before the World Cup after giving him a long run in the batting order.
If Shreyas doesn’t get fit, India might go in with Suryakumar Yadav or Sanju Samson as Iyer’s replacement at number 4. Selectors will soon announce the squad for the Asia Cup which will make the players’ roles almost certain for the upcoming World Cup 2023 in India.
