As per Hindustan Times reports, a member of India’s selection committee told Rohit during the England tour in July that the panel had decided to move on from him. The selector also reportedly asked whether he would announce his retirement after the third ODI against England at Lord’s on July 19.
Rohit was reportedly unhappy and angry with the decision. However, the report says that he eventually agreed to the selectors’ call.
The sequence of events unfolded at a surprising time, as Rohit had played one of his best ODI innings of recent times in that very match. He scored a brilliant 138 off 110 balls at Lord’s while India were chasing 388. India eventually lost the match by 27 runs, but Rohit’s century shows that he could still make a big impact with the bat.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had also denied those reports at the time and said Rohit would continue playing as long as he remained part of India’s plans.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI future remains unclear
The main reason behind this decision by the board is likely India’s plans for the upcoming ODI World Cup. The selection committee wants to build a younger team and give players like Yashasvi Jaiswal more opportunities before the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Despite the latest report, there has been no official confirmation about the same. He could remain in contention for India’s upcoming ODI series against West Indies, which is scheduled to begin on September 27.
