Rohit Sharma recalled what happened on the field after Suryakumar Yadav took the catch in the ICC T20 WC 2024 final.

On the first anniversary of India‘s victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final, Rohit Sharma, under whom the team won the title, recalled the match-winning moment of Suryakumar Yadav‘s catch during the encounter. The current Indian T20I skipper Yadav pulled off an incredible catch near the boundary to dismiss David Miller in the final over of the match.

Notably, South Africa needed 16 runs for victory off the last over of Hardik Pandya. On the very first delivery of the over, Pandya bowled a wide full toss delivery, which Miller slammed towards the long off. At first, it seemed like it would easily cross the boundary.

However, Suryakumar Yadav showed incredible fielding efforts to collect the catch. He grabbed the ball and juggled it inside the boundary as he was about to cross the ropes. However, he balanced himself and did not touch the boundary ropes and later completed the catch.

While speaking in a video on JioHotstar, Sharma recalled what happened on the field when Yadav took the catch. He revealed that everyone was nervous when the decision went to the third umpire.

“Even after [the catch], the umpires sent it up to the third umpire, and it was being checked whether Surya caught the ball or not, and everyone’s hearts were in their mouths. I thought it had gone [for a six]. Because I was at [long-on], I was standing opposite Surya. I was already thinking ’10 needed off five balls’, but then I saw that it’s coming to Surya,” he said.

“It would have taken a blinder to take that catch. It would have taken a lot of effort to take that catch. Because when it was in the air, it looked like it would cross the rope easily. But the way the wind was blowing, that pulled the ball a little bit into the ground, I think,” he added.

Sharma also revealed that he was so nervous that he could not look up at the screen for the third umpire’s decision.

“I was standing with Surya when they were checking the catch and I told him ‘You only tell me, I don’t want to look. No, no I caught it.’ But then I saw him on the side telling someone ‘Maybe, I don’t know. But I caught it’. And then they showed the zoom camera, and when the ball or feet touch the boundary rope, it moves, but nothing happened. So we were a little happy,” he further added.

Miller’s dismissal turned the match in India’s favour as South Africa lost all of their key batters after his wicket. Eventually, Pandya leaked only eight runs in his final over and powered India to victory by seven runs. South Africa ended with 169/8 on the scoreboard.

Earlier, India piled up 176/7 in the first innings with a 76-run knock by Virat Kohli. After the victory, India ended their 11-year-long wait for an ICC title. Kohli won the Player of the Match award.
