Rohit Sharma made his international cricket debut in 2007.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been a prolific performer for India over the years. He has been a legendary batter for India in limited-overs cricket and has won matches for India on his own. However, he was not able to settle or cement his spot in the test playing XI. However, since 2019, from the time he started opening in tests as well, he has grown leaps and bounds.

In 2021, when Virat Kohli stepped down as a test captain after the leadership turmoil in Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma took over the reins. He has led admirably, although he has faced criticism due to his captaincy style in tests and his ability to let the games drift away. However, he has led the team well, as was seen when India came back strongly in the second test match against South Africa in Cape Town and levelled the series.

In the recently concluded five-match test series at home against England, he led India to a 4-1 series win. India were on the back foot after a loss in the first test. However, Rohit Sharma-led side came back strongly and won the next four games. Sharma has also faced criticism due to his inconsistent scores in test cricket. However, he answered his critics back in style with two centuries in the five-match test series against England.

With Rohit Sharma being close to the 37-year mark, questions are being raised about whether he will soon retire from one format or cricket as a whole. After the fifth test match in Dharamsala, Rohit spoke about his retirement. Rohit Sharma expressed that if there ever comes a day when he wakes up feeling inadequate or not up to par for playing cricket, he will openly communicate this feeling to others. However, he honestly believes that in the past two or three years, his skills have improved significantly, and he currently feels that he is playing at his best level.

“I think if one day if I wake up and feel I’m not good enough, I’m not feeling good enough to play the sport. I’ll just talk it out and let them know about it. But honestly, I feel in the last two or three years my cricket has actually gone up and I’m playing the best cricket,” said Rohit.

Rohit Sharma also talked about the change that he wants to bring in his side. He wants players to not focus on the numbers and play their game freely.

“I’m not too much of a stat person who looks into numbers and all of that. Yes, scoring big runs, those numbers are important, but eventually there is a culture of playing cricket in this team that I was focusing on and I am still focusing on. I wanted to bring a certain change. You know, players going out there and playing with a lot of freedom. That statistical side of cricket, I want to take completely out of this team.

People are not looking at numbers. People are not looking at their personal scores. Play the game. Numbers will take care of itself if you are playing well. If you’re fearless, If your mind is clean and clear, other things will take care of itself. But don’t look out. Go out there looking for ok, can I get a 50 here? can I get 100? Obviously, all those numbers are good. It will happen. But just take that completely out of your mind and just focus on the game.

Enjoy the surroundings. Enjoy the atmosphere within the group. Enjoy the camaraderie that we’ve created now within the group. That is what it is. For me, that’s the most important,” said Rohit.
