Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not played any T20I game for India after the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final loss.

The last one year has been a roller-coaster ride for Indian selectors who are looking to build a roadmap for the next big ICC event in June 2024. West Indies and USA will host the 9th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in the month of June. India will be playing their next T20I series against Afghanistan starting from 11th January. This series will make lot of things clear about Indian team management’s plan for the mega upcoming ICC T20.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not played a single T20I game after India’s semi-final loss against England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. A few reports suggest that both senior cricketers are keen on playing the upcoming T20 World Cup. They are likely to have a meeting with Indian selectors and support staff during India’s second test against South Africa at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Rohit Sharma is leading the side against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli to hold meeting with management

Part of the selection panel are Shiv Sundar Das and Salil Ankola who are currently present in South Africa. Chief of the national selection panel Ajit Agarkar will also join the selection panel. Agarkar will reach South Africa during the second test. Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel will hold a meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid and both the senior cricketers about their future in the T20I format. They have not announced a squad to take on Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series starting three days after India’s tour of South Africa concludes.

A pool of 30 T20 specialist cricketers will likely be monitored during India’s three-match series against Afghanistan and the two-month-long Indian Premier League tournament will decide on the final 15 members for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. A BCCI source has informed the news agency PTI, “Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya aren’t fit. The Afghanistan series won’t tell you anything. Everything will be decided on the basis of the first month of IPL.”

Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are injured and ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Team Management are yet to decide on who will be leading team India in Afghanistan series. If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are picked for the series against Afghanistan, Rohit will be leading the side and this will make a clear signal about their participation in the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA as the series against Afghanistan will be the last T20I series for India ahead of the mega T20I event.
