Rohit Sharma was the second-highest run-scorer at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Veteran opener Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Rohit-led Men in Blue defeated Aiden Markram’s South Africa by seven runs in the grand finale in Barbados on June 29.
With this victory, India ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought and won their second T20 world title after 17 years. Sharma, who was part of India’s title win in 2007 in South Africa, became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win the T20 World Cup.
Under Rohit, the Indian cricket team became the first side to win a T20 World Cup by remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. During the press conference after the final, the T20 World Cup 2024-winning skipper announced his retirement from the shortest format.
During his great career, the opener played 159 matches and amassed 4231 runs – he retired as the leading run-scorer in the format – at an average of 32.05. He smashed 32 half-centuries and five centuries, which is the joint-most right now.
I will remember Barbados pitch forever: Rohit Sharma
After winning the final, Rohit pulled a couple of crumbs out of the pitch on which the match was played and ate them. In the latest video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on X, Rohit revealed the reason behind his famous Novak Djokovic celebration of eating the pitch.
Sharma said that since India won the final on that pitch, he wanted to keep something of it as a memory and pay respect to the pitch and the ground. The opener further added that he will remember the Kensington Oval ground in Barbados forever.
“You know… I was feeling the moment when I went to the pitch because that pitch gave us this. We played on that particular pitch and we won the game, that particular ground as well. I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well. So, I wanted to have a piece of it with me. Yes, those moments are very, very special. The place where all our dreams came true, I wanted something of it. That was the feeling behind it,” Rohit said.
