Rohit Sharma was sacked as India ODI captain ahead of the Australia tour.
Senior Indian Cricket Team batter Rohit Sharma was at the receiving end of a harsh decision by the Indian selection committee. The player, who captained the side to ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title triumph, was removed as the ODI captain ahead of the Australia tour.
Shubman Gill, who took over the test captaincy from Rohit Sharma following his retirement, was named as Rohit’s successor in ODIs as well. The decision was taken, keeping in mind the future of Indian cricket and plus the fact that Rohit would be 40 by the time of ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
But, with the way Rohit Sharma has performed, both as a batter and a captain, many expected him to carry on as India’s ODI captain till ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. Since he took over the Indian leadership, he changed India’s fortunes in white-ball cricket, adopting fearless cricket.
Rohit Sharma walked the talk and showed the way to the team. Under his leadership, India won all the games in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 except the final, which was the biggest heartbreak for almost every Indian cricket fan.
However, after that, Rohit Sharma gave India two ICC trophies within a span of a year – ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which both India won unbeaten. In his last game in ODIs, which was the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he won the Player of the Match for his 76 against New Zealand.
