Root announces retirement from professional cricket after a 14-year career.
Joe Root is one of the best English batters ever, and he has proved his credentials with the bat time and time again. However, there are reports circulating about the current reinstated captain of the England men’s Test team, claiming that he has retired from professional cricket. Even though the news is not totally fake, it’s not actually him who is retiring from cricket.
The younger brother of England’s Test captain Joe Root, Billy Root, has announced his retirement from professional cricket. Billy made his first-class debut in 2015, and within a span of two years, he also made his List A and T20 debuts.
Billy represented Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan in county cricket during his career, and after 14 years of professional cricket, he has said goodbye to the game.

Billy couldn’t excel as a T20 cricketer, averaging only 21.13 and striking at 111 after playing seven T20 Blast seasons. Billy played 83 first-class games, scoring 4,107 runs at an average of 32.08, including seven tons and 17 fifties. His highest score in red-ball cricket is 229.
He also played 60 List A games, scoring 1,665 runs at an average of 40.60. Even with these numbers, he couldn’t become the most successful batter in his household, as his elder brother Joe Root went on to represent England and become one of the best English batters of all time.
Announcing his retirement, Billy stated that it’s time for the next chapter. He posted on social media with the caption:
“It has been an absolute privilege to represent two great clubs and to share in the success of four trophy wins. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to make a career out of something I have loved since I was a kid.
“There have been plenty of ups and downs over the last 14 years, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ll always be incredibly grateful for the journey, the people I’ve shared it with, and the opportunity to live out a childhood dream. Thank you to everyone who has played a part.”
