Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed the Captain of Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2024 IPL season.
One of the most successful Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is led by a boy from Maharashtra — Ruturaj Gaikwad. Since his debut, he has amassed more than 2500 runs for the franchise, in the 71 matches that he played, averaging nearly 40. He has been Chennai’s best batsman since he announced himself.
While CSK had been looking to nurture a new captain for the franchise after MS Dhoni, Gaikwad seemed the perfect fit for the role. He qualified for the position based on his phenomenal batting, his temperament and the fact that he had been leading the Maharashtra domestic team for some time now.
Ruturaj’s tenure as a skipper has been a test of resilience

Gaikwad’s captaincy journey has been anything but smooth. He has been under constant scrutiny for the decisions he made and for the results that followed.
Being a successor of one of the world’s best captains — MS Dhoni, can never be an easy task. Dhoni won all the ICC trophies as a captain and led CSK to five titles during his stint. He has been known to prepare his successors beforehand, and give them a set stage.
When the baton passed in 2024, CSK fans had mixed reactions to the decisions as it came as a surprise to many. It was only a week prior that it was officially announced that Gaikwad will be taking over the captaincy that season. In 2024, Ruturaj had a good season with the bat and CSK finished 5th on the points table — missing out on the playoffs.
In 2025, after a few initial matches, Ruturaj had succumbed to an elbow injury which led to him getting ruled out of the whole season. That is when MS Dhoni took over the role and led CSK for the remainder of the season.
Ruuturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy safe as of now – Reports
In 2026, CSK squad was one which looked decent. It had good batsmen, with the inclusion of Sanju Samson, and a decent bowling attack. However, injuries was something that CSK was unfortunate with in 2026. They were devoid of the services of Nathan Ellis, who was supposed to be their go-to death bowler. As the season progressed, a lot of CSK players gave in to injuries, like Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre, MS Dhoni, Jamie Overton, Ramakrishna Ghosh.
Every time they felt like having a settled combination, they ended up losing another player to injury. Because of so many uncertainties and imbalances, 2026 was yet disappointing campaign for CSK and the skipper. Ruturaj himself had a very poor season with the bat, scoring merely 337 runs. It was believed that his form with the bat was affecting his captaincy, and vice versa.
A franchise which was known to find winning ways in the worst of circumstances has not even qualified for the playoffs since past three seasons. This is something a lot of CSK fans are finding hard to accept. They believe that Ruturaj the batsman matters more to the franchise and that they would not mind him focusing just on that.
However, reports in Revsports suggest that currently CSK are not looking to change their captain. They have shown their trust in the new skipper and would look to stick around with him.
Ruturaj has been named in the 15-member squad for the Tri-nation A series starting 9th June. He has also been named the vice Captain of the side, replacing injury-stricken Riyan Parag.
