South Africa will miss a trick if they don't take Faf du Plessis for 2023 ODI CWC: Dinesh Karthik
Faf du Plessis last played for South Africa in an ODI in the 2019 World Cup group stage match against Australia.
Dinesh Karthik, the wicket-keeper for India, expressed his support for Faf du Plessis and emphasized the importance of including the seasoned player in South Africa's squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. Karthik believes that it would be a missed opportunity if the veteran batsman is not selected.
Du Plessis' outstanding consistency in the IPL 2023 season
Du Plessis has exhibited remarkable consistency while opening the batting alongside Virat Kohli for the Royal Challengers Bangalore during the IPL 2023 season. The South African batsman has already amassed over 700 runs for his team, emerging as a reliable and influential performer. Across 13 matches, du Plessis has accumulated 702 runs at an impressive average of 58.50 and a strike-rate of 153.94. He has also recorded eight half-centuries, playing a crucial role in providing a solid foundation for the Bangalore-based franchise on numerous occasions.
Having been teammates with du Plessis at RCB for a couple of years, Karthik expressed his lack of surprise regarding the former South African captain's consistent performances. Karthik firmly believes that despite being 38 years old, du Plessis still possesses a wealth of talent and has much to contribute at the international level.
“I’m not at all surprised with Faf’s form because I think he’s a terrific player. He’s a very good leader as well," said Karthik in the latest edition of The ICC Review.
“In the last four, five years of IPL, he’s been very consistent and he’s just had another year where he’s been even more consistent, even more effective, even more powerful," he added.
Although du Plessis retired from Test cricket in 2021 and hasn't played for South Africa at the international level since February of the same year, he has expressed his willingness to make a comeback for the Proteas in white-ball cricket. Despite stepping away from the longer format, the right-handed batsman remains open to representing his country in limited-overs formats.
Faf's Impressive Record in India
With an impressive record in ODIs played in India, du Plessis has showcased his prowess by accumulating 696 runs in 14 innings, boasting an average of 58. Given this remarkable performance, Karthik asserts that it would be a straightforward decision to include someone of du Plessis' experience and skill in the tournament. The veteran's track record speaks for itself, making him a valuable asset to any team participating in the tournament.
“I think South Africa will be missing a trick if they don’t take him to the World Cup. I think he is ready. He is somebody who can make a difference as a leader, as a batter," Karthik said.
“So I genuinely wish Faf says yes, when South Africa asks him because he will make an impact at that World Cup if he’s there," he added.
