Jasprit Bumrah was caught on stump mic terming South African captain Temba Bavuma “Bauna.”
South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince on Friday stated that the visitors are letting go of Indian players Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant’s unsavory remark on the Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma’s height while discussing the DRS decision on day one of the first test in Kolkata.
South Africa batted first in the first test between the two sides in Kolkata after winning the toss. Despite a 57-run opening stand between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, the Proteas couldn’t form other partnerships to construct a huge total, as India’s Jasprit Bumrah rattled them with 5/27.
Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj picked up two wickets each, while Axar Patel took one wicket as well. India ended day one on 37/1 at stumps, with KL Rahul and Washington Sundar being the unbeaten batters. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the one wicket India lost.
“It’s the first time”—Ashwell Prince on India players calling Temba Bavuma ‘Bauna’
Proteas batting coach Ashwell Prince was asked whether South Africa will take action on Indian players calling Temba Bavuma “Bauna,” which means a midget, while discussing a DRS review. He stated that since it was the first time, there would be no discussion about the incident.
The exchange occurred on the final delivery of the 13th over in South Africa’s innings, when Bumrah’s leg-before appeal against Proteas captain Temba Bavuma was denied at 62/2. The stump mic caught Bumrah saying, “bauna bhi hai,” during the discussion of whether or not to take the DRS. Many took this as a jab at Bavuma’s height.
However, in his conversation following the events of the first day, Prince disassociated the team from any such controversy.
“No, there will be no discussion. It’s the first time, obviously, it’s come to my attention. I don’t think there’ll be any issues with what’s happened out in the middle,” Prince said at the post-day presser.
After recovering from a calf ailment, Bavuma returned to lead the test team. However, his brief and unmemorable appearance was cut short when Kuldeep Yadav used a leg-slip trap to knock him for 3 off 11 balls.
He had previously missed the beginning of South Africa’s ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title defense against Pakistan last month due to the injury.
