SA vs AUS: South Africa announce squad for 2nd Test, Matthew Breetzke replaces Tristan Stubbs
The 2nd SA vs AUS Test will take place on Sunday at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha.
South Africa find themselves in a must-win situation as Australia hammered them in the first game of the three-match Test series in Durban. After winning the ODI series, South Africa went into the Test series with confidence.
However, they fell behind on Day 1. At one stage, Australia were 124/6, but from there they scored a challenging 390 runs, which took the game away from the hosts.
After that, the South African batters’ careless batting made it even worse. They lost the 1st Test by a massive 214 runs, and it was also Temba Bavuma’s first-ever Test defeat as captain.
That has surely pressed the panic button in the South African camp as the hosts have made a few bold changes for the second Test. The second Test is scheduled to begin on Sunday at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha.

A win is essential for South Africa as the series is on the line. They need this win to level the series. The last defeat has already hurt their chances for the WTC 2025-27 final. After the defeat, they have slipped from second to third place.
Despite a poor show with the bat in the 1st Test, South Africa have included Ryan Rickelton in the squad. Unfortunately, Tristan Stubbs has been dropped after a string of low scores. Stubbs has only two 50+ scores in the last 16 innings.
He scored 32 and 1 in the Durban Test and got out playing rash shots in both innings. The rest of the squad is similar to what South Africa picked in the first game.
Breetzke, who has scored 14 runs in two Tests for South Africa, has an ODI average of 58.73 and scored a match-winning century in the first ODI against Australia three weeks back.
His ODI form is the key reason for his selection. Head coach Shukri Conrad confirmed his selection in a conference and said, “The fact that his ODI form is as hot as it is gave him an inside lane.”
Ryan Rickelton will take on wicket-keeping duties in the 2nd Test
Conrad also confirmed that Rickelton will don the wicket-keeping gloves in the second Test, indicating Kyle Verreynne’s exclusion from the playing XI, who has gone without a fifty in the last 11 innings.
South Africa’s Squad for the 2nd Test:
Temba Bavuma (C), Matthew Breetzke, Aiden Markram, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Anrich Nortjé, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton (WK), Dane Paterson, Kyle Verreynne (WK).
When and where will the second SA vs AUS test take place?
