SA20 2025: England all-rounder Ben Stokes to join MI Cape Town

Ben Stokes is currently out injured after tearing his hamstring in The Hundred tournament.

Ben Stokes, England all-rounder, and test captain has joined the MI Cape Town franchise for the upcoming season of the SA20 league in 2025. He has joined the franchise along with New Zealand pacer Trent Boult.

The SA20 franchises have been looking for top test players from England for the third edition in 2025, as many of them were preoccupied with the visit of India during the 2024 season.

Joe Root has been recruited by Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals’ Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow, and Chris Woakes have gone to Joburg Super Kings and Durban’s Super Giants respectively, while Zak Crawley has been grabbed by Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Stokes is ready to return to his happy hunting ground, Newlands, where he delivered one of the greatest test innings of all time against the Proteas at the foot of Table Mountain, scoring 258 off 198 balls.

Stokes has scored 3023 runs in 159 T20 matches, with an average of 24.77 and a strike rate of 133.23. Similarly, he has taken 90 wickets at an average of 30.38.

Trent Boult joins his 4th Mumbai Indians-owned franchise in the T20 leagues

On the other hand, New Zealand pacer Trent Boult, who retired from T20Is during the recent T20 World Cup 2024, has joined his fourth MI-owned franchise in the T20 leagues. He has previously played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI New York in MLC, and MI Emirates in the ILT20.

The 35-year-old was a member of the Black Caps squads that reached the ICC ODI World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019, as well as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in 2021.

“MI, MI Emirates, MI New York, and now MI Cape Town. I’ll be donning the Blue-and-Gold colors in the edition of SA20. Playing at the scenic Newlands is going to be special. I know, it’s going to be Lekker,” Boult was quoted in a release from MI Cape Town as saying.

Stokes and Boult join other overseas players like Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Nuwan Thushara, and Chris Benjamin. The roster of domestic players is as impressive: Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Rassie van der Dussen, Ryan Rickelton, and George Linde are joined by Delano Potgieter, Thomas Kaber, and Connor Esterhuizen.
