SA20 2026: Head coaches of all 6 teams

SA20 2026 will start on December 26.
The SA20 has rapidly established itself as one of the most competitive T20 leagues in the world, blending elite international talent with strong local cores and high-quality coaching setups.
As the 2026 season gets underway, the spotlight is not just on the players but also on the coaches tasked with shaping strategy, managing star power, and extracting consistency in a short, intense tournament.
From legendary former captains to tactically astute domestic specialists, each franchise enters the new season under leadership that could prove decisive in the race for the title.
All coaches of each team-
Paarl Royals – Trevor Penney (Zimbabwe)
Trevor Penney is a highly experienced former Zimbabwe international and long-time coach who has worked with multiple international teams, including Sri Lanka, India, and West Indies, as well as franchise sides around the world.
Penney’s franchise credentials are particularly notable within the Royals family after serving as lead assistant coach with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
He was appointed head coach of the Paarl Royals for the SA20 2025 season, replacing Shane Bond. The Royals have managed to qualify for the playoffs in every season, but have yet to reach the final.
Pretoria Capitals – Sourav Ganguly (India)

Sourav Ganguly brings immense stature and strategic gravitas to the Pretoria Capitals setup, serving as a mentor and guiding force within the SA20 franchise. One of India’s most influential former captains, Ganguly is credited with ushering in a new era of aggression and self-belief in Indian cricket during the early 2000s.
His post-playing career has been equally impactful, having served as BCCI President and as Director of Cricket for the Capitals group, shaping long-term vision across franchises.
The Capitals reached the tournament final in their very first year, but have yet to win. The 2025-26 season will be Ganguly’s first stint as coach.
Durban Super Giants – Lance Klusener (South Africa)
Lance Klusener, the legendary South African all-rounder nicknamed “Zulu,” has brought aggressive insight and deep T20 knowledge to the Durban Super Giants as head coach since the league’s inception.
Known for his match-winning exploits in the 1999 World Cup and his hard-hitting style, Klusener has guided the franchise to a runners-up finish in Season 2 while fostering a fearless brand of cricket suited to Kingsmead’s conditions.
His tactical acumen and local expertise continue to shape a balanced squad. As of late December 2025, with the 2025-26 season just underway, starting December 26, the Super Giants are poised for a strong campaign under Klusener’s steady leadership, aiming to capture their maiden title.
Joburg Super Kings – Stephen Fleming (New Zealand)

Stephen Fleming, one of the most accomplished coaches in T20 cricket with multiple IPL titles at Chennai Super Kings, has lent his calm strategic brilliance and man-management skills to the Joburg Super Kings since Season 1.
The former Kiwi captain is renowned for building resilient teams and extracting the best from star players, consistently guiding JSK to playoff contention with a best finish of third. However, contrary to the success achieved at CSK, Fleming will be feeling the heat after three consecutive below-par performances at the SA20.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape – Adrian Birrell (South Africa)
Adrian Birrell, the most successful coach in SA20 history, instills a strong family culture and tactical discipline at Sunrisers Eastern Cape, having led them to back-to-back titles in the first two seasons and multiple finals.
With vast experience in South African domestic cricket and a focus on nurturing local talent from the Eastern Cape region, Birrell has built a cohesive unit that thrives under pressure at St George’s Park.
His emphasis on unity and smart cricket has made the SEC the benchmark franchise. This season will be a test for Birrell, as the team will be without their captain, Aiden Markram, who led the franchise to two consecutive triumphs.
MI Cape Town – Robin Peterson (South Africa)
Robin Peterson, the former Proteas left-arm spinner, has become an astute mentor. He provides MI Cape Town with local knowledge and global experience, and his ability to understand the conditions at Newlands and identify emerging talent helped them become champions last season.
Appointed from Season 2, Peterson’s calm demeanor and connection to international stars have elevated the franchise from early struggles to title contenders.
His role in fostering aggression and team harmony aligns perfectly with the MI ethos. Heading into the 2025-26 season starting December 26, 2025, Peterson’s side enters as defending champions, with the potential to repeat their heroics, given the fearsome side they have picked.
