Shubman Gill slammed 754 runs in the ENG vs IND series.
Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has lauded current test captain Shubman Gill for his heroics in the test series against the England Cricket Team. He said that the right-hander captained and controlled the team brilliantly even when they were under pressure.
Shubman Gill, in his first test assignment as a captain, did a terrific job both as a batter as well as the leader. The premier batter was handed the captaincy after Rohit Sharma called time on his career in the longest format of the game.
Gill didn’t take long to make an impact as he hit a century in his very first innings as a leader. Although he lost the opening game of the series, under his leadership India made a strong comeback in the series, winning their first ever game at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Then, they won the last game at The Oval by the barest margin of six runs. The win helped to draw the series by a margin of 2-2. The England tours are often considered the toughest, and Gill did a fantastic job, leading from the front.
He looked calm and composed – Sachin Tendulkar on Shubman Gill
As a leader, Gill looked really calm and even in the pressure situations, he didn’t panic. Even Sachin Tendulkar was amazed by it, and while speaking to Reddit, he said:
“Captaincy has a lot to do with how the bowlers are bowling, how disciplined they are and how long they can persist with their plans. Sometimes what happens is that if things are not going the bowlers’ way, they start experimenting.“
“That is when the captain feels that the fielders he has on the ground are not enough, he needs more, because runs will be coming from everywhere. He still looked calm and composed, but when partnerships happen, it becomes difficult for any captain, and the priority becomes to dry their runs.”
He controlled the team well – Sachin Tendulkar on Shubman Gill
Tendulkar added that Gill controlled the team brilliantly, but added that he could’ve done some things differently. He added:
“Overall, I felt he controlled the team well. There were areas things could’ve been different but, everyone has their opinion. This was his first series and possibly against the most attacking side in Test cricket. I don’t think any other team bats the way this England side does.”
Gill ended the series as the leading run-getter with 754 runs in 10 innings. He also slammed four centuries, including a double ton.
