Sachin Tendulkar tweeted heart-warming messages for the retired duo.
India cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has paid a rich tribute to India captain Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli after they announced their retirements from T20Is following India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title victory in Barbados.
Tendulkar took to social media to hail India’s two senior-most players who were also opening partners in this tournament. Tendulkar recalled their illustrious careers, their path to maturity and excellence, and their eventual T20 World Cup victory.
Indian cricket fans’ wishes to see India lift an ICC trophy came true after a decade-long drought, with a stunning victory over South Africa in the final, which earned them their second T20 World Cup title.
The majority of pundits and fans had already earmarked this tournament as the last chance for both Rohit and Kohli to add a T20 title to their trophy cabinet; this is the first one for Kohli and the second for Rohit. Their T20I careers have got the perfect farewell.
Virat Kohli starred in the final with a knock of 76 runs, which earned him the Player of the Final award. As for Rohit, he was the reason India was in the final as his assault on Australia and then on England in the semi-final gave the Indian team major boosts heading into the final. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
Ending on a high: Sachin Tendulkar pens emotional post for Kohli and Rohit
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli finished as the top two all-time run-getters in the T20I format. Sharma has 4231 runs in 159 games with a record five centuries and 32 fifties. Kohli finished with 4188 runs in 125 games with one century and 38 fifties to his name.
Sachin recalled his own experience of watching both Rohit and Kohli on their route to maturity and greatness throughout their iconic T20I careers. The Master Blaster penned an emotional post for the duo.
Tendulkar tweeted, “ENDING ON A HIGH! @rohitsharma45, I’ve witnessed your evolution from a promising youngster to a World Cup-winning captain from close quarters. Your unwavering commitment & exceptional talent have brought immense pride to the nation. Leading to a T20 World Cup!! Victory is the perfect culmination of your stellar career. Well done, Rohit!
“@virat.kohli, you have been a true champion of this sport. You may have had a rough time earlier in the tournament, but last night you proved why you’re truly one of the greats of the gentleman’s game. Competing in six World Cups and clinching victory in the last one is an experience I know well. I hope to see you continue winning matches for India in the longer formats of the game.”
