Sai Sudharsan has been picked in India squad for England test series.
The Board of Control for India (BCCI) announced the much-awaited India squad for the forthcoming test series against the England Cricket Team on Saturday, May 24. The apex body also appointed Shubman Gill as the new skipper of India’s test side following the retirement of Rohit Sharma.
Rishabh Pant was picked as Gill’s deputy in tests, while the main highlight of the squad was the addition of Sai Sudharsan, who earned his maiden test call-up. The Southpaw has already made his debut in white-ball cricket, having played three ODIs and one T20I game so far.
India will clash with England in five tests during the tour. The series will begin at the Headingley, Leeds from June 20. The fifth and the last test will be played at the Kennington Oval in London from July 31 to August 4.
Sai Sudharsan reacts after receiving maiden India test call-up
After getting maiden India test call-up, Sudharsan said he feels special as every player’s ultimate goal is to play test cricket.
“It obviously feels great. Feels very special to be honest, and surreal also. Any cricketer, any young cricketer who starts playing cricket, wants to play Test cricket, wants to play for the country. The ultimate goal is always to play Test cricket. So really happy for that,” the left-handed batter said during prior to GT vs CSK clash.
When asked which would be his favourite position while batting, Sai Sudharsan, who usually plays as an opener for his domestic team Tamil Nadu, said he would be comfortable with any position the team gives him.
“I think playing for the country itself is a very big privilege for a cricketer. So I don’t think I am in a position to choose where I want to play. Wherever the coaches tell me to play, I think I will be mentally and obviously skillfully, you know, try and be ready for the opportunity. I think I will have to be ready for whichever [position] the team gives me. I will be ready for that,” the 23-year-old further added.
Notably, after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from tests earlier this month, the opening slot and No. 4 slot have become vacant. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan is currently busy with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Sudharsan also owns the Orange Cap currently and is the leading run-scorer in the tournament. He has mustered 638 runs in 13 games at an average of 53.17. He has also smacked one century and five half-centuries for the team.
