“If he plays 45-46 overs, I think he can break”- Sanjay Bangar names Indian star who can go past Rohit Sharma’s highest ODI score mark

Rohit Sharma scored 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 in an ODI, the highest score by a batter in the format.
Former India coach Sanjay Bangar has picked Shubman Gill as the batter to possibly break legendary Rohit Sharma’s record for the highest individual score in One-Day International cricket. Rohit Sharma, who is the only batter to hit three double-centuries in ODIs, holds the record for the highest score by a batter in the format—264.
Rohit Sharma had hit the record score in 2014, playing against Sri Lanka in an ODI in Kolkata. Rohit Sharma played 173 balls after opening the innings and hammered 33 fours and nine sixes, scoring 264 runs. He got out on last ball of the innings, trying to break the then record for the highest score in List-A cricket—268, held by Ali Brown.
This score remains the highest ODI score by a batter as Rohit Sharma continues to wow in international cricket, despite retiring from T20Is after winning the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 and from tests in May 2025.
“If he bats 45-46 overs, he can break it”—Sanjay Bangar says Shubman Gill can break Rohit Sharma’s record

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar selected Indian test captain and all-format sensation Shubman Gill to beat Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s record of the greatest individual score in ODIs of 264 runs, claiming that the youngster could do so if he batted 45-46 overs.
“Shubman Gill has also scored a double hundred in one-day cricket. So, he has tasted it. And if Shubman Gill plays 45-46 overs, I think he can break the record,” Bangar said in a show on Doordarshan.
Gill has scored 2,755 runs in 55 ODIs at an average of 59.04, with eight hundreds, 15 fifties, and a top score of 208 against New Zealand in early 2023.
Gill opened the innings in Hyderabad, scoring 208 in just 149 balls with 19 fours and nine sixes, reaching the milestone in 48.3 overs. He joined Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan as the only Indians to have scored double tons in one-day internationals.
Sanjay Bangar also backs Abhishek Sharma to break Yuvraj Singh’s fastest T20I fifty record
Sanjay Bangar also stated that Abhishek Sharma will break Yuvraj Singh’s record of the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian. Singh had struck a fifty in 12 balls against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup in Cape Town.
Bangar explained, “He is his student. And he hits sixes in the same way.”
Abhishek has 849 runs in 24 T20I matches and 23 innings at an average of 36.91 and a strike rate of 196.07, with two hundreds and five fifties, his best performance being a 54-ball 135 against England at Wankhede Stadium earlier this year.
