Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar took a brutal dig at Virat Kohli during the ongoing first test between England and India. The two teams are locking horns in the opening game of the five-match series at Headingley, Leeds. The home team skipper, Ben Stokes, won the toss and opted to bowl first in the encounter.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul opened the batting for India. They etched an opening stand of 91 runs to take their team off to a great start. The duo showed great teamwork, putting England bowlers under pressure before Rahul lost his wicket for 42 runs.
Sai Sudharsan, who made his test debut, completely failed with the bat as he bagged a four-ball duck. However, skipper Shumban Gill scored a half-century after taking over the crucial number four batting slot for India in the encounter. Jaiswal went on to score a century, hitting a ton in his first test match in England.

Manjrekar, who is one of the commentators during India’s tour of England 2025, took a dig at Kohli without naming him on-air. During the first session of the match, when Rahul left a delivery on the off-side, he said:
“We know of a former batter who would have gone after that delivery and gotten himself into trouble,” the commentator was quoted as saying on air. The remarks came in the 21st over, when England pacer Brydon Carse bowled a delivery outside off-stump to Rahul. The video of the moment was shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Notably, Kohli faced a lot of trouble in facing deliveries outside off during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Australia. He also lost his wicket on many occasions by getting an edge on such deliveries. Kohli announced his retirement from test cricket last month, ahead of India’s tour of England 2025.
Meanwhile, India had a brilliant start to the game after being asked to bat first. At the time of writing this piece, they had over 260 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of three wickets. Jaiswal scored a wonderful knock of 101 runs off 159 balls before losing his wicket to Stokes during the third session.
