Rohit Sharma played 67 tests for India from 2013 to 2024.
Senior Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from tests on Wednesday, May 7. He also conveyed his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). After Sharma’s retirement from the longest format of the game, cricketer-turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has targeted him on social media over his poor batting form during the last one year.
Sharma made his test debut in November 2013 against West Indies and played a total of 67 games for Indian Cricket Team. He played his last test match against Australia in December 2024. He was the test skipper since February 2022; when he took the reins of the side from former skipper Virat Kohli.
Sharma also played the role of opener for Team India in the longest format for the last few years. However, his form and fitness issues often became a concern for selectors over the last one year. The 38-year-old struggled to come up with a good batting shows in India’s last two series against New Zealand at home and Australia Down Under.
Sanjay Manjrekar targets Rohit Sharma on X after test retirement
Former India opener Sanjay Manjrekar shared a distasteful tweet for Sharma on micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, May 9. Manjrekar elaborated on Sharma’s poor stats during his previous outings in the home test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
“164 in his last 15 innings. Out of which 10 were at home v Bangladesh & NZ. Average 10.9. With his current fitness levels…Rohit Sharma’s days as Test opener were over. So…”, he wrote on X. Have a look at the tweet below.
Notably, the India vs Bangladesh test series took place in September-October last year. Sharma scored 42 runs across four innings during the series; which India won 2-0. During the three-match series against New Zealand in October-November 2024, the Indian opener mustered 91 runs across six innings.
Sharma also dropped himself during the Sydney test against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. He scored just 31 runs across five innings during the away series. In 2024, the right-handed batsman scored 619 runs across 26 innings at an average of 24.76, including two tons and two fifties.
Although he has pulled down the curtains on his test career, he will continue to lead the ODI team after his test retirement. He retired from T20Is last year after guiding India to ICC T20 World Cup title in 2024.
