Sanju Samson scored a match-winning century in his last ODI outing in December 2023.

Indian wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson has finally opened up on his snub from India’s ODI side following the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors ignored wicket-keeper batter Samson while selecting ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour despite the fact that he had hit a match-winning century in his last ODI match against South Africa at Paarl in December 2023.

The Indian selectors picked Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul as the two wicket-keeping options for the Sri Lanka ODIs. Pant made his comeback to the ODI setup since his car accident in December 2022. However, the move didn’t work as both Rahul and Pant failed with the bat against Sri Lanka. India lost the three-match series 2-0 in Colombo.

I don’t overthink: Sanju Samson on ODI snub

Amid the failures of Rahul and Pant in Sri Lanka, many fans and cricket experts questioned the management and selectors for not giving Samson regular chances in the Indian cricket team.

During an interaction on Zee TV, Samson was questioned by a journalist about his ODI snub: “You scored a century in South Africa but were dropped from the ODI squad. In an ODI World Cup year, you’re playing T20Is, and in a T20 World Cup year, you’re playing ODIs. There’s a lot of buzz on social media about this. What are your thoughts on the selection?.”

In response, the star wicket-keeper batter Samson said he prefers to stay positive and tries to improve his game in the nets instead of overthinking about his selection or exclusion.

“When they call me to play, I go and play. If not, it’s okay. I don’t overthink it. The team is doing well, so there’s no issue. I prefer to stay positive and focus on what I can control. I put maximum effort into my practice and hard work, which is improving my game,” Samson replied.
