Sanju Samson is the only Indian batsman to score two consecutive hundreds in T20I.
Sanju Samson is going through a remarkable turnaround in his career under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav.
After years of being on the fringes and not getting consistent opportunities, Samson has grabbed his recent chances with both hands to make a strong statement. Actually, two strong statements by becoming the first Indian batsman to hit two consecutive T20I centuries.
He plundered a century against Bangladesh in the third T20I of the series last month in Hyderabad. And then, played a blistering knock of 107 off 50 balls in the first T20I against South Africa in Durban. This has strengthened his case for inclusion in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, though that is way too far to be thought of at the moment.
Amid Sanju’s excellent recent form, his father, Samson Vishwanath, has expressed frustration over the lack of opportunities for his son over the past decade.
Vishwanath put the blame on former captains MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for hindering his son’s career progression.
Sanju Samson’s father accuses Indian cricket icons of hindering his career growth
Voicing out his frustration, Vishwanath noted that several Indian cricket icons hampered his son’s career growth.
He said, “There are 3-4 people who wasted 10 years of my son’s vital career…captains like Dhoni ji, Virat [Kohli] ji, Rohit [Sharma] ji, and coach [Rahul] Dravid ji. These four people destroyed 10 years of my son’s life, but the more they hurt him, the stronger Sanju came out of the crisis.”
Amid these frustrations, however, Vishwanath expressed gratitude to current coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav for their support, crediting them for reviving Sanju’s career.
He added, “I am very happy, and I want to thank Gautam Gambhir bhai and Suryakumar bhai, if these two people did not come at this time, they would have dropped him from the team like in the past.”
Samson made his T20I debut for India in 2015 but didn’t play another match for four and a half years. He started to get chances since late 2020 but only now is being able to prove that he belongs at the international level. In his T20I career Sanju has scored 701 runs at a batting average of 25 and a strike rate of 151.
