Indian wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson has expressed his love for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) amid rumours of him leaving the team ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. According to reports, Samson has urged RR to either trade or release him ahead of the next season as he seeks a fresh start in the league.

Samson is the current skipper of RR and made his debut for the team in IPL 2013. After IPL 2015, he moved to Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for two seasons and rejoined RR in the 2018 edition. In 2021, he was appointed as the skipper of the side and led the team to the final in IPL 2022.

Ahead of IPL 2025, the RR skipper was retained by the franchise for INR 18 crores. However, RR produced a dismal performance in the tournament, finishing at the ninth spot in the points table with just four wins across 14 games.

During a chat with former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter’s YouTube channel, Samson said that his journey with RR has been great. He also highlighted how the franchise trusted him at the start of his IPL career.

“RR has meant the world to me. A small child coming from a village in Kerala, wanting to show his talent. And then Rahul (Dravid) sir and Manoj Badale sir gave me a stage to get up and show the world what I am made of,” he said.

“That time, they trusted me throughout. The journey with RR has been really great, and I’m very grateful to have been in a franchise like that. It really means a lot to me,” he added.

Notably, Samson is reconsidering his future in the IPL due to the team’s poor show under his captaincy in IPL 2025. According to reports by Cricbuzz, due to the emergence of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi as openers, Samson has been given the No.3 batting slot, something he is not very interested in.

In IPL 2025, Samson played only nine out of 14 games due to multiple injuries and scored 285 runs at a strike rate of 140.39, hitting one half-century.
