Sanju Samson is one of the best openers and wicket-keeper batters to play in Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, he has been associated with three teams in the tournament.

The right-handed batsman made his debut in the 2013 edition for Rajasthan Royals (RR). Scoring 206 runs in 11 games with one half-century, he made an impact as a youngster. He was retained in the squad till the 2015 edition.

The keeper-batter played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) when Rajasthan were banned in the 2016 and 2017 editions. However, after RR made a comeback in the 2018 edition, Samson was bought by the franchise once again.

With his consistent performances, Samson became a key batter for RR and was retained by the franchise every year. Ahead of IPL 2021, they appointed him as the captain. In the 2022 edition, RR finished as runners-up under Sanju’s captaincy.

Ahead of IPL 2026, Samson parted ways with RR as he sought a fresh journey in the tournament. He was traded to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a price of INR 18 crore.

Interestingly, Samson made his debut for CSK in match 3 of IPL 2026 on March 30 against his former side Rajasthan Royals. He failed to make a mark in the clash, getting out for just six runs.

However, Sanju Samson has held a brilliant record in his opening games of IPL tournaments over the years. For instance, he scored a 50+ scores in his first game of every season from 2020 to 2025. Below are Samson’s records in his opening games of IPL tournaments since his debut.
