India have had a fantastic start to their New Zealand tour.

Sanju Samson scored 67 off 33 balls as India chased down 226 runs against New Zealand in the first T20I. After the match, Samson said he and Abhishek Sharma do not follow any complex plan when opening the innings. They simply watch the ball and try to hit it hard.

Samson and Abhishek added 93 runs for the opening wicket as India recorded their highest successful run chase in T20I cricket. India won by four wickets, with Shreyas Iyer scoring 42 runs and Naman Dhir remaining unbeaten on 42.

“We do have a lot of conversations happening in the middle, but nothing makes sense actually. We just watch the ball and hit hard. It has been working very well for us and I like batting with him at the top,” Samson said at the post-match presentation ceremony after winning the Player of the Match award.

Samson also explained how he and Abhishek planned to make the most of the powerplay. He said the ball was swinging, but it was also coming nicely onto the bat, allowing them to play their attacking shots.

“The ball was swinging around a lot, I think in the second half, a bit too much actually. But off the surface it was coming on very nicely. So I think me and Abhi just felt like keeping the shape and having a very positive intent in the powerplay,” he said.

The Indian wicketkeeper added that their quick start made them believe they could finish the chase early.

“Once we got off to a flying start, we felt the match could be finished in the first half as well. Six overs, 90-odd runs – that was a great start today. So I think we just wanted to go all out,” Samson added.

Sanju Samson also credited his teammates for the victory and said it was a collective effort. He was happy that India started the five-match series with a win.

“It feels really good. I think, yes, we are just in the moment where the match has been won. Whatever contribution you make, I think it feels good to end up on the winning side,” he said.
