Sanju Samson’s poor T20I form continued despite his return to the Indian T20I setup for the Afghanistan series.

Sanju Samson has had several wonderful experiences wearing India colours, especially in the shortest format of the game, but inconsistency seems to remain the key debate in the cricketer’s international cricket career. Despite having shown the potential to deliver match-winning innings, the cricketer has failed to convert these chances into consistency.

Now, this aspect seems even more important as the T20I cricket setup of India gets more competitive with time. Not only are there more young options emerging in the batting department, but players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have produced excellent performances. Nevertheless, Sanju Samson still remains a valuable asset due to his experience.

It is important to mention here that Sanju Samson played a major role in India’s T20 World Cup squad in 2026 win. However, his statistics after that triumph have been rather inconsistent. Hence, he cannot afford to miss any chance to prove himself. 

In the first T20I against Afghanistan, he managed to score just 10 runs while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan turned out to be crucial in India’s seven-wicket win.

Samson’s latest run of form underlines the reason for him being in focus. The right-arm batter has found it difficult to gain any kind of traction in his recent T20I matches, posting scores of 5, 0, 1, 27, and 10 in his last five innings.

• India vs England, 5th T20I – 27 runs off 14 balls
• India vs England, 1st T20I – 1 run off 7 balls

• India vs Ireland, 1st T20I – 5 runs off 4 balls

The figures are certainly not pleasant to see, especially because Samson will be fighting for a spot in a batting lineup that has a number of options available. The discussion has heated up already, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi having already made the cut for the Indian squad in the T20I series against Afghanistan.
