"Satisfying to be here..": Australia captain Pat Cummins ahead of ICC WTC final
Pat Cummins-led Australia will take on India for the ICC World Test Championship from 7th June at The Oval, London.
Australia quickly established their dominance in the World Test Championship cycle by convincingly defeating their Ashes rivals, England, with a 4-0 victory on their home turf. They further solidified their position with a series win in Pakistan and secured crucial points by drawing 1-1 in an away series against Sri Lanka.
Their home series against West Indies and South Africa provided a significant advantage, virtually guaranteeing their place in the WTC Final. This relieved some pressure as they headed to India to conclude their cycle. Nevertheless, a triumph in Indore not only ensured their first-place finish in the WTC standings but also showcased their commanding performance.
WTC Final is 'Exciting' Opportunity for Australia to Win Historic Title
According to Cummins, the opportunity to win the mace this week serves as a well-deserved recognition for the team's consistent efforts during their extensive travels.
"It's really satisfying (to be here). You've got to win lots of games, not only at home but away," Cummins said.
"The team has been excellent over the last few years and they deserve to be here in the Final. It's all to play for. It's exciting."
WTC Final Brings Added Rivalry
Cummins also mentioned that the WTC final brings an additional layer to the rivalry, which has already been fueled by recent encounters and players representing the same domestic teams.
"I think through IPL we know a lot of the guys now as well, which always kind of has some healthy battles.
"I think in a lot of ways we play a similar style. Some quick bowlers, the batters want to get out there and take the game on, and there's been really close battles over the last few years, so it's going to be a bit different playing in a neutral venue but it should be good fun.”
Winning the Mace Would Complete the Collection
According to Cummins, obtaining the mace would complete the collection of silverware for the men's team and secure its place in the trophy cabinet.
“It's a trophy we haven't won in Australian cricket," Cummins said. "Test Cricket for me is always the pinnacle.
"I've had some great series wins over the years, but to play in this tournament ... I think it could be the most special.", Cummins added.
