Shahid Afridi remarked that Shaheen Afridi should be given some time to prove himself as captain.

Legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) amidst speculation of Babar Azam replacing Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new Pakistan captain.

The left-arm speedster took over the leadership responsibilities from Babar as T20I skipper last year after their poor show in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Azam was removed as Pakistan captain after the ICC tournament, as the PCB decided to make Shaheen the new skipper in the shortest format ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

Shaheen started his captaincy journey in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand last year, but it was a horrible start for him and the team. Pakistan were crushed by New Zealand as they lost the series 4-1.

Things went downhill for him in the Pakistan Super League 2024, as Lahore Qalandars won just one game out of 10 matches under his leadership. The Qalandars finished at the bottom of the points table, which raised eyebrows about Shaheen’s leadership and skills.

Biggest problem with our cricket is that our system changes whenever the faces change in the board: Shahid Afridi lashes out at PCB board

A few days ago, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed that the new chief selector will determine who is going to lead Pakistan in the T20I format. Reacting to this statement former Pakistan skipper Afridi stressed the importance of patience and consistency in the leadership role within the team. He remarked that Shaheen should be given some time to prove himself as the leader.

“I think that if you have appointed someone as captain (Shaheen) and given him the responsibility, then give him time as well,” Afridi told the media on Tuesday.

“The biggest problem with our cricket is that our system changes whenever the faces change in the board. Whoever comes thinks whatever he is doing is the best for Pakistan cricket,” Shahid said.

“If you change the captain then either the decision to appoint him was wrong or the decision to change him now is wrong,” he added.
