Shai Hope breaks Brian Lara's record for most centuries by West Indies captain in ODI cricket

Shai Hope has surpassed Brian Lara’s tally of five ODI centuries as West Indies captain.
West Indies Cricket Team ODI captain Shai Hope came up with a special innings during the second ODI of the three-match series against the New Zealand Cricket Team. The match between the two teams took place at the McLean Park, Napier, on Wednesday, November 19.
While other West Indies batters struggled against New Zealand bowlers, Hope seemed to be batting on a different surface, playing an unbeaten innings of 109 runs off 69 deliveries, with 13 boundaries and four sixes. With a superb strike rate of 157.97, he dominated Kiwi bowlers till the end as they failed to dismiss him during the clash, which was reduced to 34 overs per innings due to rain.
In what was his 19th ODI century, Hope propelled the team’s total to a mammoth 247/9 in the first innings. For New Zealand, Nathan Smith (4) and Kyle Jamieson (3) finishing as leading wicket-takers.

With his marvellous ton, Hope has become the West Indies captain with the most centuries in the 50-over format. He has surpassed legendary Brian Lara, who held the earlier record with five tons. Lara scored 19 centuries in his entire ODI career. The next three West Indies captains on the list are Chris Gayle, Vivian Richards, and Richie Richardson.

Meanwhile, Hope also crossed the mark of 6000 ODI runs with his ton, becoming the second-fastest West Indies batsman to reach the mark in 141 games after Vivian Richards (142). He also equalled Lara’s tally of 19 ODI centuries and is only behind Chris Gayle (25) in the list of West Indies batters with the most hundreds in the 50-over format.

Meanwhile, Hope’s ton went in vain as his side lost the encounter by five wickets. With half-centuries by openers Devon Conway (90) and Rachin Ravindra (56) and quickfire 39 runs by Tom Latham, the hosts won second consecutive ODI to seal the three-match series. Earlier, Mitchell Santner & Co. won the opening game by seven runs. The third game will be played on November 22 at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
