Shashank Singh has been accused of assault.
PBKS star player Shashank Singh is in the spotlight following the subsequent filing of an FIR for assaulting and mistreating his cook. Along with him, his father, Shailesh Singh (a retired IPS officer) and his driver are also co-accused in the same offence.
They are booked for brutally assaulting, verbally abusing and confining the cook against his will. They are reported to have exploited the victim’s services by ill-treating him and not even paying him for the work.
Cook Vipendra Singh Tomar lodged a complaint at the Ratibad Police Station in Bhopal on Monday, June 29. He had started working for them on June 25, but in the first few hours of joining, he realised the abusive work environment and wanted to leave the job.
“Shailesh Singh (father of Shashank Singh) is a retired IPS officer; I had gone there to cook. I arrived on June 25. After observing their behaviour, I refused to work. They snatched my phone and abused me. His son, cricketer Shashank Singh, and his driver beat me severely. I was intimidated,” Tomar alleged.
Arguments over food quality led to physical abuse
After the first few days, when he expressed a desire to quit the job, the abuse escalated further. There were repeated arguments over the quality of the food he prepared.
There are reports that Shailesh Singh has attacked Tomar. The victim was eventually forced to lock himself in a room for his safety. It was then that the driver, identified as Mishra, was asked to break the door. It has been alleged that Shashank Singh asked him to open the door.
“As soon as I opened the door, both of them — the driver and Shashank — beat me up like a dog. Shashank’s father and sister also joined them and only stopped when they thought I would die,” Tomar said.
The 31-year-old, who hails from Rewa district, also submitted his Aadhaar Card and his phone to the family. They restricted him from contacting any of his acquaintances. Tomar got this job through an acquaintance who had promised him a salary of ₹15,000, free accommodation and lodging, and assistance in securing a government job.
Tomar claims that the police were initially hesitant to register an FIR. It was only after a complete medical assessment that the complaint was filed. The complainant also mentioned that they did not give him a single rupee for his work.
“They kicked me, beat me up with sticks, shoes, hands, however they could. Shashank Singh, his father Shailesh Singh, their driver, and his sister were involved in beating me,” he added.
Shashank Singh responded to the allegations levelled against him
The Ratibad Police registered an FIR based on the complaint and filed a case under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita — Section 296(B) Obscene acts and public verbal abuse; Section 115(2) Voluntarily causing hurt/assault and Section 3(5) Joint criminal liability (acts done by multiple people with common intention). Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Responding to the allegations, Shashank dismissed the claims and questioned the timeline mentioned in the complaint.
The accused, Shashank Singh, talking to ANI, clarified his stance about the situation. He dismissed the allegations about holding him hostage, and added that they suspected that the cook was actually a thief. They had found private videos of the family on his phone, and Shashank’s mother asked the cook to delete those.
Furthermore, Shashank also stated that the family did not want to involve the police in the matter, as they felt the cook was a poor man and they should let him go.
He said, “When we caught him taking photos and videos, my sister suggested dialling 100. But he pleaded, and I let him go.”
He also dismissed the allegations of verbal and physical abuse, saying, “I believe that anyone who knows me knows that a physical altercation is completely out of the question for me. I hesitate even to use abusive language, so I certainly couldn’t do something like that.”
