Sanju Samson has come under scanner for his poor outings in T20Is.

India entered the England T20I series looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2-0 series defeat against Ireland. The first T20I in Durham showed signs of improvement as the visitors recovered from an early collapse to post 189/7 on the scoreboard. However, the rain spoiled the contest before England could begin the chase.

Despite the washout, India’s batting performance gave the team management few positives. Captain Shreyas Iyer, who struggled in the Ireland series, but this time, he took charge and scored a composed fifty. Abhishek Sharma played another impressive knock of 59 runs off 24 balls.

However, one concern remains the same. Sanju Samson’s struggles with the bat continued as she was dismissed early again. Sanju has now managed only 5, 0 and 1 in his last three T20I innings on the UK tour, and this leads to the debates over his place in the playing XI.

With Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the bench after an outstanding IPL season, many fans believe India should make a change. But should the team management really drop Samson so quickly? There are good reasons why India could still continue backing the experienced opener.

3 reasons why India should back Sanju Samson in T20Is

1. Sanju Samson has already proved himself on the biggest stage

Just a few months ago, Sanju Samson played a major role in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign. He showed great cricketing skills and played some of the important innings under pressure, and helped the Indian team to lift the trophy.

Players who perform in the ICC tournaments usually earn the trust of the team management because they have already shown they can handle the high-pressure situations. It will be too early to judge Sanju Samson based on recent scores.

2. Every opener can struggle in English Conditions

Batting in England is never easy, especially with the new ball moving around under the cloudy skies. Many top batters have found it difficult to score freely in these conditions. An experienced player like Rohit Sharma has also struggled in these conditions in the past.

Samson has struggled against swing in both the Ireland and England series, but he is not the only one. India’s top order has generally found it difficult to play in these conditions.

3. Stability is important before major tournaments

India have built one of the strongest T20 sides in world cricket by backing players even in difficult phases. Captain Shreyas Iyer has already explained that the current top order helped India win the T20 World Cup and deserves the security to bounce back from the failures.

“Look, the people who have won the last World Cup definitely have an idea of how to play T20, and continuously, they have been the main pillars of that format. So, it’s very important to back them,” Iyer said during the first T20I pre-match press conference.

Why is Sanju Samson facing criticism in the England T20I series?

Sanju Samson has managed only 6 runs in his last three T20I innings in the Ireland and England series, and this leads to questioning his place in the playing XI.

When is the second T20I between India and England?

The second T20I will be played on July 04, 2026, at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Stretford.
