After impressing with his leadership in the last three seasons of Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2024, Iyer was appointed as Indian Cricket Team’s new captain by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the shortest format. He commenced his assignment with a two-match T20I series against Ireland.
With India having a 100% win record against Ireland, Iyer was expected to start his stint with a whitewash. However, the Men in Blue suffered a big setback as the hosts outplayed them in both games, bagging their first-ever T20I match as well as series victory against the Men in Blue.
The defeats continued in the T20I series against England too, as India lost three games out of four after the first washed-out game. Despite trying different combinations, Iyer failed to win any of his first six matches. Despite the dismal start as captain, Iyer has bagged a rare achievement in his kitty.
