Shreyas Iyer struck down the stumps directly from deep mid-wicket to run out Kamindu Mendis in the second ODI.
India cricketer Shreyas Iyer showcased his excellent fielding skills when he ran out Kamindu Mendis with a direct hit from a position in the deep during the 2nd SL v IND ODI.
India and Sri Lanka contested the second match of the ongoing three-match ODI series on Sunday, August 4, in Colombo.
Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat first. The hosts posted 240/9 in their quota of 50 overs with opener Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis top-scoring with 40 runs each.
Mendis’ innings was ended by a superb throw from Iyer in the last over of Sri Lanka’s innings.
Kamindu played a pull shot to a short delivery off Arshdeep Singh , but didn’t connect it properly. The top edge took the ball high in the air and towards Shreyas Iyer, who was deep mid-wicket.
The ball landed ahead of Iyer, who came charging in from near the boundary line. He picked the ball on one bounce and hurled a throw at the striker’s end, where Mendis was returning to complete his second run. The ball struck at the base of the stumps with Mendis far away from the stumps and he was run out.
Iyer and captain Rohit Sharma had smiles on their faces.

Recently, former India fielding coach R Sridhar mentioned that direct hits are not easy and not frequent.
Speaking with Khel Now, Sridhar said, “Yes, we would like to have a few more direct hits as it can change the course of the match. But direct hits are not easy. Most of the time, the angles, and the position of the fielder are challenging. If you are hitting one in four, it’s a brilliant conversion rate. But it’s good that there is always a scope for improvement in any area.”
