Shreyas Iyer arguably has been one of the most successful IPL captain in this decade.
Despite winning the T20 World Cup for India this year, Suryakumar Yadav finds himself in a strange position. However, he has only himself to blame, as his returns with the bat have been modest for a long period now. In 2025, he managed to score just 218 runs across 19 innings, at an average of 13.6.
This year at the marquee event, Suryakumar Yadav scored a match-winning knock against USA in India’s opening match, but did not enjoy much success apart from that solitary innings.
His poor form extended to the Indian Premier League (IPL), as his struggles have also hurt Mumbai Indians (MI), who have now lost four consecutive matches, after winning their opening clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Shreyas Iyer set to take over India T20I captaincy if selectors decide to move on from Suryakumar Yadav – Reports

Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles might reopen the doors for Shreyas Iyer once again in the shortest format. Iyer is a regular feature of the Indian ODI setup, where he bats at No. 4.
According to reports from Times of India, Iyer could be looked at as a potential replacement for Suryakumar Yadav, if and whenever Team India selectors decide to move on from him.
However, since Shreyas has long been away from India’s T20I team, the transition from Kumar to Iyer as captain is unlikely to be immediate.
Handing over the captaincy to a player who has not played the T20I format for India in over a year is a tough call, and hence the management would be wanting to make this a smooth transition by first giving Iyer a few games as a regular player, before appointing him as the skipper.
Reports also suggest that the focus for the next few months will be on the fifity-over format, keeping in mind the all-important 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Other options too will be weighed by the selectors for India’s T20I captaincy. They include Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, and another left-field option in potentially calling RCB captain Rajat Patidar in the team.
Why is Suryakumar Yadav under pressure for India’s T20I captaincy?
Suryakumar Yadav has struggled with consistency, scoring low runs over an extended period, which has raised concerns about his place and leadership in the T20I setup.
Can Shreyas Iyer replace Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain?
Yes, reports suggest Shreyas Iyer is being considered as a potential option if India decides to move on from Suryakumar Yadav.
