"His strategies have been spot on.." Shreyas Iyer lauds Gautam Gambhir ahead of IPL 2024 final

KKR reached the IPL 2024 final under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy and Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer has credited mentor Gautam Gambhir for the team’s brilliant form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Kolkata are all set to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the grand finale of the season at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26.

The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup-winning player Gautam Gambhir was roped in by the Kolkata franchise as their mentor ahead of the 2024 season. The former Indian batsman previously played a huge role as mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in the 2022 and 2023 editions, when they reached the playoffs in two consecutive seasons.

And now under the guidance of Gambhir, KKR are having a phenomenal run in the ongoing season. The franchise finished at top of the points table with 20 points and then continued their winning momentum in the playoffs.

KKR defeated Hyderabad by eight wickets in the Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad and earned a direct qualification to the grand finale. It is to be noted that the Iyer-led side also defeated SRH in their league stage match earlier this season at the Eden Gardens.

As KKR’s captain, Gambhir won two IPL titles in the 2012 and 2014, and he is now aiming to win his first championship as mentor with the same franchise.

Ahead of their much-awaited final against SRH, the KKR skipper was asked about leading two different franchises (he was captain of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2019 and 2020) and the influence of Gambhir in shaping the present KKR side.

In response, Iyer said that Gambhir has vast knowledge about the game. The Kolkata captain added that Gambhir’s strategies have been accurate in terms of every opponent they have faced in the season.

“The hype is definitely created by you guys. Where I stand is definitely upon you. But talking about Gautam bhai, he has got immense knowledge about how the game is played, has won two titles previously with KKR, and his strategies have been spot on in terms of what we have to execute against our opponents. He adds a lot of cream to the team and hopefully we continue the same momentum in the final,” Shreyas Iyer said during the pre-match press conference.
