Management believes that Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill can lead India for a long time.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faced significant backlash after Shreyas Iyer was not selected in the Indian Cricket Team‘s squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Many fans and former cricketers lashed out at the governing body, highlighting that the batter had done nothing wrong.

Shreyas Iyer, who has been in red-hot form with the bat across all forms of the game, was expected to be named in the team. However, the chairman of the selectors, Ajit Agarkar, categorically stated that there was no room for him to be selected.

However, amid all this, there is some good news for Iyer and a development that might please many Indian cricket fans. As per the reports in Dainik Jagran, it is learned that the right-hander is all set to take over the ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma

The decision related to the ODIs will take place after the Asia Cup 2025 concludes. The reports claimed that BCCI will be having discussions with Rohit Sharma related to his future, and only after that, Shreyas Iyer will be given the ODI captaincy.

The management believes that Shreyas Iyer, along with Shubman Gill, has the potential to lead India for a long time. The reports suggested that BCCI is looking forward to having two captains in the three formats, as it will be difficult for one player to lead the team in all three formats due to workload.

The reports also added that Shubman Gill will be leading the Indian team in the T20Is soon. The batter was added to the squad for the Asia Cup 2025 and was also named as vice-captain. He returned to the T20I team after 2023, and it invited a lot of criticism.

There were recent reports in the Indian Express, which stated that team management and head coach Gautam Gambhir want to groom Gill as the young captain in T20Is. They believe that he can lead the team for a long time and help them achieve success.

Gill was recently appointed as the test captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format. Gill did a great job as a leader, as under him India drew the five-match series against England by a margin of 2-2. Also, he led from the front, slamming 754 runs to go with four tons, including a double century.

Who is the current captain of the Indian Cricket Team?

Rohit Sharma (ODI), Shubman Gill (Tests) and Suryakumar Yadav (T20Is) are the current captains of the Indian Cricket Team.

Who will replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain of India?

As per the reports in Dainik Jagran, Shreyas Iyer is likely to replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain of India.
