Shreyas Iyer provides major update on Ishan Kishan's injury ahead of IND vs AFG 1st T20I
Shreyas Iyer will lead India against Afghanistan in the three-match T20I series.
India received a boost ahead of their first T20I against Afghanistan after skipper Shreyas Iyer provided an encouraging update on Ishan Kishan’s fitness. The wicket-keeper batter’s availability remained a major concern after he sustained an injury during a training session in New Delhi on Friday.
Kishan recently joined the Indian team after leading East Zone to Duleep Trophy 2026 glory. His spectacular performances in the domestic competition, particularly his record-breaking 270 in the final, have put him in the spotlight.
With the Afghanistan series starting on September 13, his availability raised selection concerns for India. The injury scare came at an unfortunate time, with Kishan competing alongside Sanju Samson for a spot.
The batter is currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC men’s T20I rankings. However, Iyer’s latest comments have eased concerns surrounding the left-hander.

According to reports, Ishan Kishan sustained an injury at the end of the net session on Friday. While attempting to duck a short delivery, the batter appeared to experience discomfort in his back. The Indian support staff immediately attended to him, and Kishan did not continue batting.
Speaking ahead of the series opener, Captain Shreyas Iyer provided a positive assessment of Kishan’s condition.
“Well, I feel that he is comfortable at the moment. I interacted with him after the practice session. “It was just a small niggle, and he has been playing continuous cricket. We all know the knock he played. So, definitely a bit fatigued. But today he got that rest, and I am sure that he will be fine for tomorrow,” said Shreyas Iyer.
Kishan’s availability will further strengthen India’s playing XI. If Ishan remains fit and plays the first T20I, Sanju Samson might have to sit on the bench. For now, the captain’s statement indicates that Kishan will take the field in New Delhi on September 13.
