Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer will need 3-4 months of rest before beginning training after his shoulder surgery.

Full time captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the entire season of IPL 2023 as well as the ICC World Test Championship final scheduled in June this year. Iyer is struggling with his back injury for a long time. Now he has finally decided to go overseas for the surgery. Shreyas Iyer will be out of the Cricketing action for the next 3-4 months. Iyer’s absence will play a crucial role in Kolkata’s campaign in Indian Premier League this year. KKR had a poor start to their IPL and lost against Punjab Kings.

Setback not just for KKR

The 28 year old Right hand batter has been struggling with a lower back injury since December 2022 against Bangladesh. He missed India’s 3 match ODI series against Australia. He also missed the Border-Gavaskar trophy’s last game at Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. Shreyas Iyer had severe lower back pain and experienced swelling on both occasions. Because of Iyer’s injury, KKR decided to go with Nitish Rana as their stand in captain for the IPL 2023. Apart from KKR, this is also a big setback for the Indian Cricket team. India is scheduled to play against Australia in the WTC final in England.

In KKR’s first game, their new captain’s inexperience was visible. Nitish Rana is an experienced and integral member of the KKR setup and was given the role of captain this season. He has a lot to prove in the upcoming games for KKR. Kolkata will soon announce the replacement of their full time captain Shreyas Iyer. Against Punjab Kings, KKR batting looked weak and also their bowling changes were criticised heavily. Rana had 7 bowling options available yet he chose to bowl only 5. Punjab taking advantage, scored 191 runs in their 20 overs.

In their next game, Kolkata will host Royal Challengers Bangalore. Bangalore had defeated Mumbai Indians convincingly in their opening game. Kolkata will take on RCB on 6th April at Eden Gardens. Nitish Rana, in the absence of Shreyas Iyer will look to start fresh at home.
