Shubman Gill joined the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli in the elite list.
Indian Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill kicked off his test captaincy career with a bang as he smashed a sensational hundred in the ongoing first test against England. The first test between England and India for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 is underway at Headingley, Leeds.
Talking about the match, England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to field first. The decision turned out to be a horror for the hosts as the visitors’ opener Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a hundred before the touring captain Shubman Gill scored his ton. Gill reached his hundred off 140 deliveries during the thrid session.
The Indian skipper scored his sixth test century and his first-ever in England. Moreover, he also added another rare achievement to his kitty by becoming the fifth Indian player to score a century on test captaincy debut. He has joined the likes of Indian legends Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Virat Kohli for the achievement.
Indian captains to register test hundred on test captaincy debut
Vijay Hazare was the first ever Indian batter to hit a hundred on test captaincy debut. He smashed 164* against England in Delhi in 1951. Hazare’s unbeaten 164 is also the highest score by an Indian batter on test captaincy debut.
Sunil Gavaskar was the second Indian batter to hit a hundred on test captaincy debut. Virat Kohli was the last batter before Gill to hit a hundred on test captaincy debut. What made Kohli’s feat more incredible is he hit twin-centuries on his test captaincy debut. Apart from him, only Greg Chappell has achieved the feat in test cricket history.
Indian batters to hit hundred on test captaincy debut:
- Vijay Hazare – 164* vs England, 1951, Delhi

The left-handed batsman got out for 101 runs off 159 balls. He also gave a wonderful start to the batting, etching a 91-run stand with opening partner KL Rahul for the first wicket. The latter lost his wicket for 42 runs.
Sai Sudharsan, who made his test debut in the clash, lost his wicket for a four-ball duck. Meanwhile, with centuries by Jaiswal and Gill, India have gained a dominating position in the first ENG vs IND test. The visitors have crossed 350 runs for the loss of three wickets.
