Shubman Gill named captain as India announce squad for Zimbabwe T20I tour, 5 new faces included

Shubman Gill will lead India for the first time in T20 internationals.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Star batter Shubman Gill has been named as captain of the young side. The five-match T20I series will be played from July 6 to July 14.

Currently, the Indian side is playing in the in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and it was expected that the senior members would miss the upcoming Zimbabwe series. However, six cricketers who are in the 15-man squad for the global tournament have been named for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.

Apart from Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed, who are part of T20 World Cup 2024 squad have been included by the BCCI selection committee for the upcoming T20I series. It is to be noted that opener Gill and seamer Avesh were part of the India squad as reserves until the USA leg.

The Men’s Selection Committee has also awarded few young stars for performing extremely well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy and Riyan Parag earned their maiden call-up to the Indian side in the T20Is. All three young players were in top form during the IPL 2024. Apart from them, wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel and Tushar Deshpande have also been handed their maiden T20I call-ups

In the spin department, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar will lead the attack for the Men in Blue during the Zimbabwe series. Avesh, Mukesh Kumar, and Tushar Deshpande will lead the Indian cricket team pace attack during the upcoming five-match T20I series.

Schedule for India vs Zimbabwe T20I series:

The five-match T20I series between the two sides will be played at the Harare Sports Club. The first game will be played on July 6, followed by the second on July 7. The third and fourth matches are scheduled to be played on July 10 and 13. The final match of the series will be played on July 14. All matches will be start at 1:00 PM (Local) (4:30 PM IST).
