Shubman Gill was recently appointed as India’s ODI captain.

Former Indian pacer RP Singh has revealed that former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid spotted Shubman Gill’s leadership potential four years ago. Singh recalled an old conversation with Dravid, where the former Indian coach said that Gill would captain India and serve the team for a long time. Recently, Gill was appointed as India‘s captain in ODI cricket.

The right-handed batsman will start his stint as ODI captain of India with the series against Australia Down Under. Earlier in May, the 26-year-old was appointed as the test captain following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the longest format of the game. He led the team to a 2-2 draw in the five-match test series against England in his first assignment.

Gill is also the vice-captain of the T20I team. The right-handed batsman made his international debut in 2019. So far, he has played 38 tests, 55 ODIs, and 28 T20Is for India. He is currently leading the side in the test series against West Indies.

Rahul Dravid spotted Shubman Gill’s leadership qualities long back, reveals RP Singh

While speaking on Sony Sports, former Indian bowler RP Singh, said that Dravid predicted long back that Gill would become the captain of India in future.

“Before he (Dravid) took over as the head coach, we were having a chat. When we sit, we keep talking about the game. We were talking about who’ll become the next big fast bowler, spinner and all that,” he said.

“After a while, I asked Rahul bhai, ‘Who do you think can become the next captain? We have a lot of captaincy candidates in our team. Who can become the permanent captain?’ There were the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. He said ‘Shubman Gill’. It was like 4 years ago,” he added.

He also revealed that Dravid said that Gill will captain India and serve the team for a long time.

“I told him ‘Rahul bhai, he is not playing all three formats’. He is like ‘leave all that, he has got immense potential’. He said, ‘one day, he will become unstoppable. He will captain India and serve for a long time’,” he further said.

Meanwhile, the second test between India and the West Indies will begin on October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After winning the opening game by an innings and 140 runs, India lead the two-match series 1-0. The ODI series against Australia will start on October 19 with the first game in Perth.
