WATCH: Shubman Gill gets clean bowled by a ripper in Ranji Trophy return; Internet shocked
Shubman Gill will lead India in ODIs and Tests in the upcoming tour of New Zealand.
The Ranji Trophy 2026-27 is underway, and India’s top cricketers are currently in action. Indian Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill also turned to his state team to prepare for the upcoming New Zealand tour.
Gill joined the team in the second-round game against Chhattisgarh, which is currently being played at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
But the Indian captain’s return to domestic cricket was disappointing. In the first innings, he was dismissed for 1 off 5 balls. He was clean bowled by left-arm spinner Ajay Jadav Mandal. Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first.
Punjab started well with a 55-run opening stand between Vihaan Malhotra (40 off 77) and Harnoor Singh (20 off 70). But after the first wicket fell, Punjab suffered a mini collapse. They were 55/0 and lost three wickets for 13 runs.

Gill joined the Punjab team to prepare for the upcoming assignments in New Zealand. India will play five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests against the Kiwis between October 22 and December 01.
Gill’s return proved fruitful for him and Punjab. His weakness against incoming deliveries was exposed once again. Batting at No. 4, Gill walked out to the crease hoping to post a big score. But he was clean bowled on the third ball of the 26th over.

Gill pushed forward to defend, but the ball drifted in and went through the gap between bat and pad, knocking his stumps. The video of his dismissal quickly went viral and became a talking point among the fans.
The Indian captain featured in the Ranji Trophy after the BCCI’s decision that international players should play at the domestic level during the off-season. Gill is India’s key performer in Tests and ODIs and is currently the fourth-highest scorer across formats in 2026.
Gill will lead India in the upcoming ODI and Test series in New Zealand. It will be his first assignment in New Zealand. Especially the Test series, which is part of the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27. India need to win this series to stay in the race for the final.
