Shubman Gill recently led India to a 4-1 T20I series win against Zimbabwe and is the new vice-captain of the white-ball teams.

Shubman Gill, India’s new vice-captain in white-ball cricket, has conceded that his form in T20Is wasn’t up to the mark and hence, he readily accepted his snub from India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

India opened with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli throughout the tournament while Yashasvi Jaiswal remained on the bench. Gill flew to the USA as a backup opener but wasn’t needed and returned home.

Shubman Gill then got his first assignment as India’s captain and led India to a 4-1 series win in Zimbabwe, while topping the runs chart in the series. Next, he was elevated as India’s new vice-captain in both white-ball formats.

Ahead of the T20I series against Sri Lanka, Gill spoke on his exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad.

The 24-year-old said, “Speaking of the World Cup selection, I think my performances in T20I prior to that weren’t as good as I had expected from myself. But going forward, we’ll playing about 30-40 games in this cycle and the focus will be to perform better as a batter.”

We have a lot of understanding between us: Shubman Gill on opening with Jaiswal

With Rohit and Kohli retiring from the T20I format, Gill and Jaiswal have been pencilled in as India’s new opening pair in the shortest format. They have been picked over Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma.

In the eight matches Gill and Jaiswal have opened together, the pair have racked up two century partnerships and are already India’s fourth-most successful T20I opening pair.

About opening with Jaiswal, Gill asserted, “We really enjoy batting with each other. The kind of shots we both play, we compliment each other. Also being a rightie-leftie partnership (really helps). We’ve had many good partnerships in the limited games that we have opened together. We have a lot of clarity and understanding between us, and it is a lot of fun.”
