Shubman Gill reveals what Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar told him after naming him India test captain

Shubman Gill was appointed the test captain of India after Rohit Sharma’s retirement.

Newly appointed Indian Cricket Team test skipper Shubman Gill revealed the message from head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar after he was named as the captain. He also shared the expectations that he has for himself. 

Following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Shubman Gill as the new captain. The young batter, who is rated as the future of Indian cricket, will be leading the team in the upcoming test series against England.

Shubman Gill impressed many with his leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The young batter captained Gujarat Titans (GT) to the playoffs and also led from the front, slamming over 600 runs in the league. 

Shubman Gill will lead a young team in England, and it will also be a tough challenge for him as beating England in England won’t be an easy task. If India have to fancy their chances of winning, he will have to lead from the front and show the way to the rest of the players.

Ahead of the series, Shubman Gill revealed that Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar told him that they are not expecting anything from him and they want him to express himself. While speaking to Dinesh Karthik in an interview for Sky Sports, he said: 

“The expectations… I’ve had this conversation numerous times with Gauti bhai and Ajit bhai. They just want me to be able to express myself as a leader. That’s what they’ve told me ‘there are no expectations.” 

“They are not expecting me to do something I am not capable of. In terms of that, I don’t think that there are any expectations or pressure from them but you definitely have some kind of expectations from yourself as a leader and a player. So those are the expectations that I have from myself but not from them,” he said. 

Shubman Gill also added that he wants to build a culture in the team where everyone is secure and happy. While talking about his goal as test captain, he said: 

“Apart from all the silverware and trophies aside, I would ideally like to build a culture where everyone is very secure and happy. I know it can be a very difficult environment, especially with all the competition or the number of matches that we play and different squads coming in, but if I am able to do that, that would be my goal,” he concluded.
