Shubman Gill scored 430 runs and registered his first win as test captain at Edgbaston.

India captain Shubman Gill was over the moon as his men defeated England by 336 runs in the second test of the five-match series to level the series 1-1. This was the first test win by India or any Asian team at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

Shubman Gill, in his second test as India captain, led the team to a memorable win and stated that this victory will remain one of his “happiest memories” whenever the time comes for him to retire from the game.

India, after being asked to bat first after losing the toss, posted 587 runs thanks to Shubman Gill’s 269 and fifties by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja. England replied with 407, with Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184) adding 303 runs for the sixth wicket, while Mohammed Siraj took 6/70 and Akash Deep took 4 wickets.

India, in the second innings, posted 427/6d with Shubman Gill scoring 161, while KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja scored fifties. Set 608 runs to win, England folded for 271 with Jamie Smith scoring 88 runs. Akash Deep starred with 6/99 and 10/187 in the match.

Shubman Gill was named Player of the Match for his twin centuries and record 430 runs in the test, which is most by an Indian batter in a test match. Gill highlighted an all-around performance by the squad to make a strong comeback, which was also the team’s first victory over the hosts in Edgbaston. Gill’s captaincy began when India lost the series opener at Headingley, Leeds.

“This is something that I would cherish for the rest of my life; probably whenever I retire, I think this would be one of my happiest memories. I was meant to take the last catch of this match, and [I am] very content and happy with how we were able to finish this match. “[There are] three more important matches to go; a quick turnaround after this one and I think it’s good because the momentum is now with us,” Gill told BCCI.

Gill said Indian players took responsibility for their performances.

“The way everyone came in contributed with the ball, with the bat, those are huge positives. When there are different people stepping up and different people performing at different stages, that’s what you want. That’s what makes a champion team, and those were some great signs for us,” he added.

In his dressing room speech, the Indian skipper lauded his teammates.

“We have worked very hard to win this position. Over the past six to eight months, I knew how hard it was to be able to get a Test win, especially to do it here where we haven’t won a Test match ever. I just want to say that I’m very proud of you, everyone, because I think on day one, we mentioned it’s going to take each and every one of us to win a Test match, especially here in this country, and everyone contributed,” Gill added.

The third test between the two sides will be played from July 10 at the Lord’s in London.
