Shubman Gill has been named as India’s vice-captain for Asia Cup 2025.
India’s squad for Asia Cup 2025 was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday, August 19 at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters. The main talking point of the squad was Shubman Gill being picked as the vice-captain of India for Asia Cup 2025, hence, making his return to the T20I squad.
Notably, Gill has made his return to the T20I squad after more than a year. The right-handed batsman has not played any T20I games this year and also missed the five-match T20I series against England earlier this year.
Notably, the 25-year-old was brilliant in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper finished as the fourth highest run-scorer in the tournament.
At a brilliant average of 50.0 and a high strike rate of 155.87, the GT opener mustered 650 runs in 15 games. With a top knock of an unbeaten 93, he hammered six half-centuries in the tournament.
Shubman Gill returns to India’s T20I squad after 385 days

With Shubman Gill getting included in the Indian team for Asia Cup 2025, this means that he has returned to India’s T20I squad after 385 days. He last played a T20I game for India during the series against Sri Lanka in July last year. He played two games in that series and scored 73 runs.
Gill was named as India’s test captain in May 2025 ahead of India’s tour of England 2025. He did a wonderful job as a skipper, leading his side to a 2-2 draw in the five-match series. With the bat, he slammed 754 runs in five games to finish as the highest run-scorer in the series.
Gill also won Player of the Series award in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. After rocking with the bat in the recently-concluded test series, he will aim for a brilliant show in Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will commence on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman.
