Shubman Gill is set to lead India in the Test series against Sri Lanka.

The Indian Cricket Team is set to face Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series starting on August 15. The first Test will be played in Galle, while the second will be held in Colombo. However, before these matches, India are set to play a three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI, starting on August 7.

This Test series is important for the India in the context of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. They are currently fifth in the standings and will need to win most of their remaining matches to qualify for the ICC WTC Final.

The Indian team arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday and held their first training session the following day. They continued their preparations ahead of the warm-up match. However, on Thursday, captain Shubman Gill was forced to seek medical attention.

There are already several injury concerns in the squad, with the lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah already ruled out of the series. Any serious injury to Gill could hamper India’s chances of reaching the ICC WTC Final.

The Indian skipper, Shubman Gill, suffered a blow to his thumb twice during the net session ahead of the warm-up match against Sri Lanka A. According to several reports, he looked in immense pain and received treatment from the medical staff before continuing his net session.

Another injury is the last thing the Indian camp wants right now. They are already dealing with injuries to several key players. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were ruled out earlier, while fresh injuries to premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Sai Sudharsan, and Washington Sundar have further complicated India’s team selection ahead of the series.

Gill also has a history of suffering injuries during his career; however, he has always recovered well. Most probably, he will be fit to take the field against Sri Lanka A in the three-day warm-up match, but if the Indian team management wishes, they could ask Gill to sit out as a precautionary measure.

The Indian team need their skipper for the upcoming crucial series, and Gill has been in red-hot form across all formats.
